Today on offer is a stunning 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280S Automatic (W108), one of Mercedes-Benz's most elegant and enduring saloon designs.

Like many of the vehicles we offer, this is an honest, solid example that has survived remarkably well and presents as a rust-free car. Purchased by its current owner in 2020, a considerable amount of money was subsequently invested into returning the car to a reliable and enjoyable driver. Numerous new parts were fitted, including new door and boot rubbers, and the vehicle was thoroughly serviced and mechanically sorted, allowing it to be enjoyed with confidence.

Interestingly, the windows were tinted by a previous owner who suffered from skin cancer. While this may not appeal to everyone's taste, the tinting can be removed relatively easily should the next owner prefer the original appearance.

Despite the work carried out, the car has seen very little use in recent years, covering an estimated 500 kilometres since being acquired by its current owner. As a result, it remains a fresh and highly usable classic. While a fair amount has been spent bringing the vehicle back to a dependable standard, there are still a few cosmetic and detail items that a new custodian may wish to address to elevate the car even further.

One of the charming aspects of this example is that the seats and roof lining are original items fitted in 1971. The vehicle has been repainted at some point during its life, however this was carried out many years ago and has stood the test of time well. The majority of the chrome remains in excellent condition, particularly considering it is largely original.

On the road, the 280S performs exactly as these cars are renowned for. It drives exceptionally well, with a smooth, comfortable ride and responsive performance. The W108 is widely regarded as one of Mercedes-Benz's finest saloon cars, combining timeless styling, engineering integrity, and effortless cruising ability.

Please note that this is not a concours vehicle, nor is it being represented as one. Rather, it is a very honest, highly usable classic Mercedes-Benz that can be driven, enjoyed, and improved over time if desired. It is the sort of car that you can confidently take to events, enjoy on weekend drives, or simply admire in your garage.

For someone looking for a genuine W108 that has already benefited from substantial expenditure and attention, this represents an excellent opportunity.

FAQs for classic car buyers

How do I know if the classic car is worth the price?

Basseille Classics provides thorough pre-purchase inspections to ensure that you know exactly what you’re buying. We assess the vehicle’s condition, authenticity, and value to help you make an informed decision. Our expert advice helps you understand whether the asking price is fair based on the car’s true worth.

Can I trust the condition of the car I’m buying?

We only work with classic cars that meet high standards of quality. Our inspections cover both mechanical and exterior details, and we provide high-resolution images and videos to give you a complete picture of the car’s condition. If anything needs attention, we’ll let you know and can help you negotiate the price accordingly.

Can I negotiate the price with the seller?

When we buy on your behalf, we’ll handle price negotiations. This process keeps the buyer anonymous during price negotiations, especially when the buyer is living abroad. Whatever amount we negotiate, we share 50/50% to ensure you get the best price possible.

How long does the buying process take?

The timeline varies depending on factors such as the availability of the vehicle, your location, the clearing of funds and any necessary inspections or negotiations. However, Basseille Classics works efficiently to ensure that the process moves as quickly as possible while still giving you all the necessary information to make an informed decision.

How can I be sure the car will be delivered safely?

We partner with Argent Shipping to arrange for safe and reliable transport. Whether your car is being shipped locally or internationally, we ensure that it is securely handled and delivered to you in perfect condition. We provide full transparency throughout the shipping process. For peace of mind, we recommend getting marine insurance when shipping your classic.
