1959 Volkswagen Split Window Kombi

This particular vehicle underwent an extensive restoration after being acquired by its current owner in 2018 in largely stripped and deteriorated condition. At the time, the vehicle was missing doors, windows, interior components, wheels, and much of its running gear, while the roof and floors required substantial repair work due to corrosion and previous damage.
The restoration began with rebuilding the body structure. The roof was replaced, new gutters fabricated, and new floor sections installed throughout. All corrosion was addressed during the rebuild process.
A correct set of doors were sourced and fitted, together with safari front windows and twin rear pop-out side windows. The vehicle retains the desirable outward-opening door configuration, as fitted to early Kombis, rather than the later sliding side door arrangement.
Mechanically and electrically, the Kombi received extensive work including a complete new wiring harness, new brake piping, exhaust system, axles, and original-style wheels with hubcaps. The vehicle was successfully re-registered in 2021.
The interior was completely retrimmed with new seats, headlining, side panels, steering wheel, and dashboard components, while still retaining an original speedometer. New semaphores were also fitted and are fully operational.
Finished in factory-correct Volkswagen red and white using original Volkswagen colour codes, the vehicle presents well throughout and retains much of the charm associated with early air-cooled Volkswagens.
Power comes from an upgraded 1915cc Volkswagen flat-four engine, replacing the original 1200cc motor, while remaining otherwise largely standard apart from the addition of an electronic distributor for improved reliability. The larger capacity engine makes the Kombi considerably more usable in modern driving conditions, pulling strongly and allowing it to keep up with modern traffic comfortably while still retaining the character associated with an early air-cooled Volkswagen. The Kombi brakes well, steers well, and drives exceptionally smoothly, offering a relaxed and enjoyable driving experience. It starts easily on the quarter turn of the key.
This vehicle is not perfect and if you are looking for an absolute mint example, this is not the vehicle for you. However, it presents exceptionally well and offers exactly what many enthusiasts are searching for — a good, usable early Kombi to enjoy with family and friends while creating new memories.
