1958 Mercedes-Benz 300d “Dora”

FOR SALE: 1958 Mercedes-Benz 300d “Dora” – A Rare South African Icon
We are proud to present an exceptionally rare and elegant vehicle: the 1958 Mercedes-Benz Adenauer, affectionately known as “Dora.” Officially marketed as the 300d, this stately model shares its engine, chassis, and suspension with the legendary 300SL Gullwing, cementing its place in Mercedes-Benz history as a true flagship of its time.
What sets Dora apart from others is her rarity: it is believed that fewer than 100 right-hand drive (RHD) units of this model were ever built. That makes this vehicle not just an exceptional find in South Africa—but a true collector’s item on the global stage.
History & Provenance
This particular car has a rich and emotional history. Originally showcased in 1958 at Mercedes-Benz Pretoria, Dora was the crown jewel of their showroom floor and not intended for sale. She remained a display piece until 1964, when a young gentleman, smitten by her elegance, convinced the dealership to finally part with her.
The car remained on display in Sunnyside, Pretoria, for many years, catching the eye of a young boy named Steffan. With guidance from his father, Steffan fell in love with Dora, promising himself that one day, he would own such a magnificent machine.
Fast forward to 2015, Steffan—now a respected collector and connoisseur of the Mercedes-Benz brand—received a phone call from a man claiming to own a 1958 Mercedes-Benz Adenauer along with other vehicles he wished to sell. Intrigued, Steffan visited the seller’s property, where the car stood, somewhat neglected but rust-free, raised on blocks.
As he shared his story of seeing Dora as a child, the seller made a call to his father—the original 1964 buyer—who confirmed that this was indeed the very same vehicle. A deal was struck, and Dora returned to the hands of the one who had admired her decades earlier.
Restoration & Current Condition
Steffan began the restoration with passion—stripping and repainting the vehicle—but the Covid-19 pandemic brought progress to a halt. With uncertainty ahead, he decided to pass Dora on to another collector who could complete the project.
The restoration was finalized in 2023, and the result is a car that presents beautifully throughout:
- Bodywork & Paint: Elegant and glossy, with a high-quality respray that reflects the car’s original sophistication.
- Interior: Fully reupholstered using imported leather, the cabin is refined and luxurious—true to the Adenauer's reputation.
- Engine Bay: Clean and detailed, housing the fully rebuilt straight-6, 3.0L engine, which runs smoothly and reliably.
Since completion, the vehicle has been driven sparingly and with care. This is the first time Dora is offered on the open market, making this a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for collectors or marque enthusiasts.
Final Thoughts
“Dora” is not just a car—it’s a living piece of Mercedes-Benz history, deeply connected to South Africa’s automotive heritage. With her combination of rarity, provenance, and elegance, this 1958 Mercedes-Benz 300d is a showpiece fit for any discerning collection.
