1956 Viscount Prior 200

An exceptionally rare and wonderfully preserved piece of British scooter history, offered in remarkable original condition.

The Viscount Prior 200 is one of those obscure vintage scooters that very few enthusiasts will ever have the opportunity to see in person. Produced during the golden age of British motor scooters in the 1950s, when numerous smaller manufacturers were attempting to establish themselves in a market increasingly dominated by Italian designs, the Viscount Prior represents a fascinating chapter in scooter history.

This particular 1956 example is believed to be one of only two known to exist in South Africa. The other known example is reportedly little more than a basic rolling chassis, making this virtually complete survivor particularly special.

What makes this scooter truly remarkable is its originality. Finished in its original Dark Beige and Light Green colour combination, it retains its factory paintwork, complete with decades of beautiful, honest patina. Even the original TJ registration number remains hand-painted on the front mudguard, a wonderful piece of its South African history that has survived all these years.

This is patina at its absolute best!

Having stood unused for many decades, the scooter was subsequently brought back to running condition, but importantly, its cosmetic originality has been left untouched. There has been no attempt to repaint, over-restore or erase the signs of its past. Every mark, every imperfection and every faded surface tells part of its story.

In a world where so many vintage scooters have been stripped, restored and repainted, finding an example that has survived in such an original state is becoming increasingly difficult.

This is not a restored showpiece, nor is it being presented as one. It is something arguably far more interesting: a genuine survivor, retaining the character and history that can only be earned through seven decades of existence.

For the serious vintage scooter enthusiast or collector of unusual British motorcycles, this represents a rare opportunity to acquire a machine that is unlikely to come onto the South African market again anytime soon.

A truly special little scooter that deserves to be preserved rather than restored, allowing its next custodian to appreciate and protect its remarkable originality.

FAQs for classic car buyers

How do I know if the classic car is worth the price?

Basseille Classics provides thorough pre-purchase inspections to ensure that you know exactly what you’re buying. We assess the vehicle’s condition, authenticity, and value to help you make an informed decision. Our expert advice helps you understand whether the asking price is fair based on the car’s true worth.

Can I trust the condition of the car I’m buying?

We only work with classic cars that meet high standards of quality. Our inspections cover both mechanical and exterior details, and we provide high-resolution images and videos to give you a complete picture of the car’s condition. If anything needs attention, we’ll let you know and can help you negotiate the price accordingly.

Can I negotiate the price with the seller?

When we buy on your behalf, we’ll handle price negotiations. This process keeps the buyer anonymous during price negotiations, especially when the buyer is living abroad. Whatever amount we negotiate, we share 50/50% to ensure you get the best price possible.

How long does the buying process take?

The timeline varies depending on factors such as the availability of the vehicle, your location, the clearing of funds and any necessary inspections or negotiations. However, Basseille Classics works efficiently to ensure that the process moves as quickly as possible while still giving you all the necessary information to make an informed decision.

How can I be sure the car will be delivered safely?

We partner with Argent Shipping to arrange for safe and reliable transport. Whether your car is being shipped locally or internationally, we ensure that it is securely handled and delivered to you in perfect condition. We provide full transparency throughout the shipping process. For peace of mind, we recommend getting marine insurance when shipping your classic.
